1. Avoid disposable plates, utensils, and napkins. If it is absolutely necessary, choose options with recycled content or that are compostable.
2. Encourage your guests to recycle by making it easier for them. Have a clearly marked recycling container right next to the trash.
3. Use soy candles which contain no dyes, chemicals, or additives.
4. Serve organic or locally grown foods.
5. Look to nature for decorations. Grow paperwhites in glass containers or round up some pinecones from your yard.
6. Shop at antique stores and resale shops for serving pieces, decorations, and party favors.
7. Make confetti out of shredded documents and magazines for both volume and color.
8. Serve domestic sparkling wine and beer instead of imported. This reduces the carbon footprint of transporting heavy goods such as packaged beverages.
9. Use an online invitation service like www.evite.com. This service is free, is better for the environment, and saves the cost of paper and postage.
10. Encourage car pooling by introducing guests to each other ahead of time. Guests can reduce carbon emissions and have a designated driver, too!
